TENNIS

EASTERN DISTRICT NOTES. The tournament held by the combined Citizens and Gore Clubs on Labour Day proved a great success. No doubt the rough weather conditions on the Saturday served to discourage a number from entering. However, the entries, although not as good as last year were quite satisfactory and an enjoyable day’s tennis was spent in perfect weather. Miss L. Jopp won the ladies’handicap singles by defeating Mrs G. R. Martin in the final. Miss Jopp was playing at the top of her form throughout the day and well deserved her win. The final of the men's handicap singles produced some fine tennis. Despite the stiff handicap of owe 40, McLeod went to a 5 —2 lead. Up to this stage Chapman had been playing very erratically and it appeared an easy victory for McLeod, but Chapman put on a spurt and pulled up to 5— all. McLeod then took the lead 6 — 5 but his shots were losing their power and he was netting badly. Chapman drew. level again and took the next game 40—30 to win the set. The competition matches were continued on Wednesday and Wyndham A proved themselves to be a better combination this year, by defeating Gore A by nine sets to seven. Townsend appears to be in excellent form and he proved one too many for Chapman by defeating him 9—3. Strang, a young player who was playing B grade at the beginning of last season, has improved immensely and he gave Hall a hard set, the latter eventually winning 9—B. The Wyndham ladies proved too strong a combination for the Gore ladies by winning three singles out of the four, and both the ladies’ doubles. Citizens had a convincing win over St. Patricks by 10 sets to five, the Citizens men proving too good in all quarters. The St. Patricks ladies made a good showing. In the B grade matches, Citizens, who have an excellent team this season, defeated Gore B by 15 sets to one. In the men’s singles Clarke defeated Pankhurst 9—2. This was the only set Gore won. J. C. Millar who has not played in competition matches for the last two or three seasons is showing good form. Mataura defeated Anglican by 10 sets to five. The Mataura men were too good a combination for the Anglican men, winning all of the men’s singles and doubles. The Anglican ladies made a satisfactory showing.

In the St. Andrews v. St. Patricks match St. Andrews won by 11 sets to four. The St. Andrews team was superior in most quarters.
