CANTERBURY MARKET. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, July 21. The potato market is easier. There has been an improving inquiry from the North Island earlier in the week, but it weakened, possibly on account of the Waimarino taking more potatoes during the week than was expected. It was expected that the Timaru complement for this boat would be 1500 sacks, but at the last moment another 1700 were put aboard, representing, it is understood, the surplus one operator held over from the requirements of the South American shipment. As these potatoes went north on consignment, the natural tendency, under the cautious trading conditions this season, was to check the inquiry. As the Lyttelton consignment approximated 1500 sacks only, the effect on the Auckland market should be short lived. The South American business has cleared up a substantial quantity of potatoes and has more than compensated for the northern lack of orders. The supplies of potatoes in farmers’ hands do not appear to be heavy, but in the meantime the market is very dull. Values nominally are £5 12/6 f.0.b., s.i., for prompt whites, and Dakotas 2/6 to 5/- more. All other sections of pro--

duce are unchanged in price. Fowl wheat is worth 3/5£ and 3/6 f.0.b., s.e. . Oats are not attracting much attention. A Gartons are worth 2/6 and 2/5 Lyttelton. The advance of winter is not causing much of an increase in the inquiry for chaff which is quoted at £3 10/to £3 15/- f.0.b., s.i. LONDON WOOL SALES. IMPROVED DEMAND. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, July 20. At the wool sales, 9467 bales were offered, including 6124 from New Zealand. About 8141 were sold. There was a fairly satisfactory sale and the demand and prices were both a shade better than yesterday. The series closes on July 21. New Zealand scoured Merino “Richmond,” top 24d, average 22jd; greasy halfbred “Woodbank,” 14d and 13Jd; greasy crossbred “Hyl,” IOJd to Bid. Bradford: The market is quiet and users are well covered. Quotations: 70’s, 33d; 64’s 31d; 60’s 29d; 56’s, 21Jd; 50’s 151 d; 46’s 1/-; 40’s lid. THE DOLLAR QUOTATION. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, July 20. The dollar is quoted at 4.73.
