SILVER MISSING

DISAPPEARS FROM TAXI TWO MEN FACE THEFT CHARGES LARGE SUM INVOLVED (Per United Press Association.) Wanganui, July 21. Joseph Hyman and Hugh Glover were charged this morning with the theft of £Bl3 in silver on June 4, the property of William Toomey, of Auckevidence was similar to that given in the case against the taxidriver, John Ralph Penny, who has already been sentenced. Penny said he had known Hyman for about two years and Glover for about two or three. Witness told both that he was going through to Wellington with Toomey, and it was understood what was in the car. The accused said they would see him in Hamilton, which they did. He knew they had driven Hyman s car to Hamilton. Near Urunui a Bluebird car passed him and he noticed Hyman in it. Later he passed this car on the road and saw Glover. Witness got a duplicate key for the switch of his car handed to him by Glover three or four days previous to the journey. Witness had given Glover the original switch key. Glover had his instructions from Hyman what to do with it and that was to get a key cut. He knew the reason of the accused being on the road at the same time was to get the silver. On reaching Wanganui witness left the original switch key in the car and the front door was left open. On his way back to Auckland with Toomey witness rang up Hyman at Dr Connellys address and told him he wanted to see him. Hyman replied not to go to that address, but to Mr Singer’s office. When he later saw Hyman the latter said Glover had left the key in the car. Hyman also said the missing property was 10 miles this side of Wanganui and he was getting Mr Singer to fix up about it to return the silver to the owner. Witness met _ Glover by appointment and Glover said: “Hyman might do a bunk with the money. We will get a private car and go through ourselves.” Glover took ill and was taken to hospital. When seen there Glover advised witness to go through even if he took his own car. “We gave witness instructions where to find the money hidden on the roadside. ’ Witness came through with a man named Tew, but was unsuccessful in finding the silver. Glover told witness he had hidden the silver. Both accused pleaded not guilty and were committed for trial at the Supreme Court at Wanganui. Bail was allowed in the case of Hyman m one surety of £5OO and two of £250, and in the case of Glover one surety of £5OO and one of £5OO or two of £250.
