CHARGE OF MURDER
TRAGEDY IN FLAT.
(Per United Press Association.) Wellington, July 21. Before Mr E.. Page, S.M., to-day George Edward James, an enginedriver, aged 57, was charged with the murder on June 30 of Cecilia Smith, who was found dead in a flat in Ohiro road with a wound in her throat.
On the application of Chief Detective Carroll the accused was remanded for a week. Mr Leicester, who appeared for the accused, said the view he had so far formed from the case was that it would be of the utmost consequence to the case and the accused that as much time as possible should be left for the preparation of the defence after the evidence in the lower Court had been taken. So far the accused was not in a fit condition to appear, but there could be no justification in delaying the case to any appreciable extent and he expressed the hope that the hearing would be taken as soon as possible.
