THE “BLUE SHIRTS”
NEW IRISH ORGANIZATION. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.40 p.m.) London, July 21. General O’Duffy, late Chief Commissioner of the Civic Guards, Dublin, has been appointed head of a new organization called the National Guard, or “Blue Shirts,” formed out of the Army Comrades’ Association. The guard, is declared to be independent of all political organizations, and aims at promoting national unity and the suppression of Communism. Street fighting followed the convention at which General O’Duffy was elected. Bodies of young men and women attacked Blue Shirts, and the Civic Guards used batons to disperse the crowd. Several were injured.
