GIANT PLANE
ASTREA AT SYDNEY BIGGEST TO LAND IN AUSTRALIA FLIGHT FROM ENGLAND (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 11.25 p.m.) Sydney, June 26. After a leisurely flight from Brisbane in crisp sunshine the Imperial Airways plane Astrea reached Sydney this afternoon. Thousands of persons were impressed with the graceful landing of the largest machine which has ever visited Australia. Major Brackley and his party were enthusiastically welcomed and he was compelled to make a speech in which he expressed admiration for the beauty of the coastal scenery and the wonderful scope which this country affords for flying. He added that it was apparent that the people were thoroughly air-minded when they would turn out in such large numbers to witness the Astrea’s arrival. He felt quite sure that everybody was aware of his mission, and he hoped soon to see a regular air service between England and Australia.
An 650011 of a dozen local planes which accompanied the giant Astrea over the city were completely dwarfed by its size.
The object of Major Brackley’s flight from England to Australia was to make a complete survey of the air route on behalf of the Imperial Airways.
