Designing Own Dresses
A British dress designer is preparing for the coming revolt of women against mass-produced fashions. “Now that models can no longer be kept exclusive, the only way for women to attain individuality in dress is for them to have their clothes specially designed for them,” she has announced. “The public has learned not to mind dressing alike, but there are signs of a revolt among the fashion leaders. Clothes are such individual things that I think dressmakers are ruining their businesses by repeating models. At least they should not sell the same model to women in the same set.” She encourages women to design their own clothes. “If they have ideas but rather vague ones, I help to evolve them.’’ The passing of the stage leadership of fashion is one of the things regretted by this dress designer, who also lectures on costume at the summer school of St. Andrews University. “Stage fashions have become so ladylike,” she said, “and film fashions are taking their place as a means of influencing public taste.” vwvwwwwwwvm
