A New Cardigan in Squares. Directions are given this week for making a sleeveless cardigan in checked design. Materials: Five ounces of 4-ply wool in brown, soz 4-ply wool in orange. No. 12 needles. No. 9 needles. Measurements: From shoulder to lower edge, 19 inches: bust 34 inches. The pattern is worked in squares of brown and orange, * 6 stitches of brown and 6 of orange, knitted in stocking stitch for 6 rows, and then the colours are reversed for a further 6 rows; repeat from * throughout the garment- to form the tile pattern. . With the brown wool begin at the lower edge of the back and cast on 108 stitches with No. 9 needles. Work in pattern until the work measures 11 inches at the underarm seam. Shape the armholes by casting off five stitches at the beginning of the next two rows and decreasing one stitch at each end of your needle in every other row four times. Knit until the armholes measure 8 inches. Shape the shoulder by casting off 6 stiches at the beginning of every row until there are 36 stitches left in the centre in the back of the neck. Cast off. The front: Cast on 60 stitches and work just as you did for the back for 9 inches and then decrease 1 stitch at the front edge in every fourth row until the work measures 11 inches. This brings you to the armhole. Cast off 4 stitches at the armhole edge and decrease 1 stitch in every other row six times. Keep on decreasing at the front edge in every fourth row until there are 30 stitches left. Knit until the armhole measures 8 inches. Shape the shoulder by casting off 6 stitches on the armhole edge in evry other row until all stitches are cast off. Make the other front to match. The sleeve: Cast on 60 stitches at the wrist with No. 12 needles. Rib, 1 plain, 1 purl, for 1} inches. Change to the larger needles and the pattern and increase one stitch at each end of your needle in every sixth row, until there are about 90 stitches. Knit until the sleeve is long enough at the underarm seam. Knit two together at each end of needle in every row until 24 remain. Cast off. Make another sleeve to match. Make the band to go round the two fronts. Cast on 12 stitches and knit in ribbing, 1 plain, 1 purl with brown wool for six rows, then six rows or orange alternately all round. On the right side of the work make four buttonholes about 2/ inches apart; and this is how you make a buttonhole: Knit 4, cast off 4, knit to the end of the row. In the next row cast on four stitches over the four cast off stitches in the previous row. In the following row, knit into the back thread of the newly cast on stitches, To make up: Press lightly with a moderate iron and a damp cloth. Sew up all seams. Sew sleeves in, seam to seam. Turn up a small hem all round the bottom of the cardigan and stitch with machine. Sew border all round fronts. Finish with buttons. * A Knitted Jumper to fit a little girl of two years.—Mrs “F.H.” Enwood, has asked for knitting directions, and she particularly wants to knit it on No. 8 needles. Materials. —4oz of 4-ply wool. No. 10 needles and No. 8 needles. Begin at the lower edge, and cast on 74 stitches. Knit in ribbing 2 plain, 2 purl for inches. Change to No. 8 needles and stocking stitch (one row plain, one row purl), and knit until the work measures 10 inches from beginning. Shape the armhole by casting off four stitches at the beginning of the next two rows, and decreasing one stitch at each end of needle in every other row four times. Knit until armholes measure 5| inches. Shape shoulders by casting off four stitches at the beginning of every row, until there are 24 stitches left in the centre at the back of the neck cast-off. The front is made in exactly the same way as the back as far as the armholes.

Shape armholes in tne same way, and after the shaping work one inch, and then divide the stitches in half, t ai }d work on one side only. On the right side cast on six extra stitches at the neck edge, to make a band for the but-

tonholes. Knit this band in moss stitch, and make a buttonhole every 1| inches. Knit for 26 rows, and then shape the neck. Cast off six stitches on the neck, and work to end of row. Knit two together at the neck edge in every other row until there are 24 stitches left. Knit until the armhole is the same length as the back armhole, and then shape the shoulder by casting off four stitches on the armhole edge in every other row until all stitches are cast off. Make the other side to match. Do not cast on any extra stitches at the front edge, but make a little border of moss stitch for the buttons about five stitches wide. Finish in the same manner. The sleeve.—Cast on 40 stitches at the wrist with No. 10 needles, and work in ribbing for 3 inches. Change to No 8 needles, and increase one stitch at each end of needle in every fourth row, until there are 64 stitches on needles. Knit until sleeve is _ long enough at under-arm seam.
