TUATAPERE NOTES

PAPATOTARA EUCHRE AND' DANCE. (From Our Correspondent.) There was quite a good attendance at the fortnightly euchre and dance which was held in the Papatotara Hall on Tuesday last. The prize-winners were: Ladies—Misses E. Wells and N. Roderique tied, Miss Wells winning the draw; men’s—Mr C. Brown; consolations —Miss J. Young and Mr S. Barnett. Mr F. Brown was M.C. for the dance and Mr H. Ackers played. Euchre, On Tuesday, the 6th, a euchre tournament was held in McLeod’s rooms in aid of the school funds. Mrs M. Gorton secured the ladies’ prize and Miss M. O’Neal the consolation. The men’s prize went to Mr E. Morris and the consolation to Mr J. C. Beer. Cribbage. On Wednesday, June 7, the Tuatapere Cribbage Club held a crib evening in McLeod’s rooms there being over thirty players present. The prize-win-ners were as follows: Ladies—Mrs J. Rodgers; men—Mr C. Chamberlain; consolations—Miss M. Laurie and Mr J. Heenan. At the conclusion of the cards the annual meeting was held, Mr E. Morris occupying the chair. The president in presenting the balance-sheet thanked the members for their assistance during the past year which had been a successful one from every point of view. By running a series of euchre evenings sufficient money had been raised to pay the players’ travelling expenses. Financially the club had a balance of £ll/9, showing an increase of 1/8 over the previous year. Mr J. C. Beer endorsed Mr Morris’s remarks and said he considered the past season to have been most successful. The following office-bearers were elected: President, Mr H. McDonald; vice-presidents, Messrs S. Laurie, H. Lobb, D. Collie and E. Morris; delegates to association, president and secretary. After considerable discussion a vote was taken whether a team should be entered for the competition or not, it being decided by a large majority to enter a team. The means of conveyance of players was left in the hands of the president. The meeting was closed with a vote of thanks to the retiring president. Maori Concert Party. The members of the Rev. A. Seamer’s Maori Mission Choir held a very successful concert on Thursday night in Lawson’s Hall. The hall was well filled with a most appreciative audience. The programme which was opened with the singing of the Lord’s Prayer was followed by the singing of hymns in Maori and also in English, amongst which was the first hymn translated in Maori. Other items were: Ancient poi greeting to the Tuatapere people, the farewell to the expeditionary troops in Maori, hakas, poi dances and canoe poi dances. Miss Rangipe Ka gave a very clever performance of the long poi dance. Mr H. Tutawheao sang hymns of the old

church choir which were much appreciated. Other musical items were given on steel guitar, Spanish guitar, banjo mandolin and ukuleles. Pipe Band Ball. What was considered one of the most successful functions of its kind this season was held in Davies Hall on Friday, the 9th, the event being the Western District Pipe Band’s annual ball. The committee and band members spared no effort in making a success of the ball and were rewarded by the large crowd present. About eighty couples paraded in the grand march which was led by Mr and Mrs J. A. Young. Several novelty dances were held during the evening, the winners of the lucky spot waltzes being Miss Lissom and MiBrick (Orawia) and Mrs Arthur and Mr Shirley (Orepuki). The hall was decorated with many coloured streamers and plaids draped round the walls and the band members in their uniforms gave a Scottish effect. The Star Orchestra of Invercargill supplied the music and extras were played by Mr H. Ackers and Piper J. Evans. During an interval Mr A. G. Fraser, on behalf of the band, thanked those present for turning out in such large numbers to support a good cause. Messrs J. McLean and S. Crisp were M. The ground was in fair condition although the ball became greasy as the game progressed. The result was a win for the local boys by 19 points to 5. Mr N. Hassel controlled the game.
