WINTON COUNCIL

SWEARING-IN CEREMONY. (From. Our Correspondent.) At noon yesterday Winton’s new Mayor, Mr T. Walker, and Councillors F. Tilley, H. Cooper, W. D. McArthur, H. Liddell, T. McGillivray and F. Moore were sworn in at the Council Chambers. After the declarations had been signed by each member his Worship said he was certain the business of the town would not suffer during the next two years. The council would not be out to spend money lavishly or foolishly. The ratepayers would get value for their money and as the declaration stated, each member of the council would no doubt do his work faithfully and impartially, and according to the best of his skill and judgment. Some of the council had had previous experience at the table and those that had not had had experience in business and other ways. He referred to a message from the retiring Mayor, Mr W. Hamilton, who wished the new council a successful and happy term. Mr Walker mentioned that such good wishes from the ex-Mayor were appreciated. Councillor H. Liddell said that the rest of the council would join with him in congratulating Mr Walker on again taking the Mayoral chair and wishing him every success during his term. The retiring council had left a good credit balance, but on looking round one could see that there was plenty to do and there were certainly some things that would have to be done. No doubt the ratepayers were looking to the council to mark time and reduce the rates even more, so that the council had not a very soft time ahead of it. Mr Walker was assured of the wholehearted support of the council. ,“I think it is deplorable that in a place of the size and importance of Winton people have to be begged to take positions on the council,” declared Councillor Cooper. “It muit be without precedent for a town of this size. It is one of the worst possible advertisements for the town that we can’t get suitable men to come forward.” The remaining members of the council also spoke.
