HEAVY BOMBARDMENT
DRIVE BY JAPANESE. SEVERE LOSSES REPORTED. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Shanghai, May 9. Later messages confirm the commencement of a Japanese offensive in order to drive the Chinese far from the Manchukuo border. They are now heavily bombarding the Kupeikow Pass and also east of I-uanho. Japanese reports state that as a result of the battle at Chienan the Japanese lost 1500, it being the hottest battle since the latest drive commenced. A Japanese brigade captured Chienan on Monday, and is now pushing towards Luanchow. Japanese planes are bombing Fengyun, 20 miles north of Tongshan, where important British coalmines are situated. Chinese reports state that the Japanese are forging ahead in their latdst offensive. Following the Chinese withdrawal, the Japanese reached Changli last night, their armoured train later reaching Houfengtai, where it was unable to proceed owing to the destruction of the railway bridge. Large bodies of Chinese troops are concentrating on the west bank of the Luan River. They are evacuating Lulung and Funing, where the Japaneses repeatedly bombed them, inflicting severe casualties.
