LADIES’ HOCKEY
EASTERN SOUTHLAND GAMES. Despite the unfavourable weather conditions after several days of steady rain, the Eastern Southland A grade hockey fixtures were played yesterday, the weather being clear during the greater part of the afternoon. At Hockey Park the ground was in surprisingly good order, but in one or two other centres the grounds were on the heavy side. EX-HIGH v PUKERAU. Ex-High defeated Pukerau by 16 goals to nil after a game which, as the score indicates, was very one-sided. Pukerau were playing their first match after being promoted from junior grade and although they showed promise of developing into a good side and gave occasional flashes of bright play they were overshadowed by their more experienced opponents and the game was largely a procession of goal shooting. M. Belsham (centre), I. Laidlaw (right outer), and C. Allen and M. Ferris, among the forwards were in excellent form and played a good attacking game, while in the backs F. Allen put in some excellent work. The Pukerau players should do better as the season advances, their efforts being purely individual at present. HOKONUI v MIMIHAU. On a rather heavy ground at Mimihau, Hokonui defeated the local team by 10 goals to 2. The scores were two —all at the end of the first spell and up to that stage the play had been fairly even. . After the interval, however, Hokonui took charge and rattled up a further eight goals, while Mimihau’s score remained unaltered. Hokonui gave a good exhibition, particularly the forwards, Mrs Reid and K. Bond being responsible for most of the goals. On account of the High School holidays, the match between High School and Waikaka was postponed. All B grade matches were postponed.
