WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. (From Our' Correspondent.) At the usual meeting of the Women’s Institute on April 27 it was decided to send a delegate to the July conference in Christchurch. A birthday party on May 19 is being arranged for by the social committee. At the next meeting members will bring their handcraft exhibits for the bay at Dunedin Winter Show. A demonstration on paper work was given by Mrs Paterson.. The annual meeting of the Farmers Union, Moa Flat, was held at Wilden Homestead. Mr Whyte explained the trading department of Producers Ltd., and Mrs Smithers gave an address on farm accounting. Mr G. Young was elected president; vice-presidents, Messrs Love and Sutton; secretary, Mr C. R. Young! The West Otago Rugby Referees Assoeiation met at 4 Kelso on Monday

evening for the annual meeting. Mr Munyard was elected president, Mr W. E. McKenzie, vice-president; and Mr G. P. Cuttriss secretary. No nominations for referees have been received from Union, Heriot, or Wainahi clubs, and it was decided to ask these clubs to forward nominations at once. After referees had been appointed for first round matches, it was resolved that a letter of appreciation be sent to the late secretary, Mr P. Boylan, who had done excellent work as referee, and also for the Referees’ Associ-

ation. .... The football season at Waikoikoi was opened by a friendly match between ’Koi seniors and the Waipahi Club on ’Koi ground, and resulted in a win for ’Koi: 14 points to 3. The duck shooting season opened on Monday morning in good weather. Ducks were not plentiful on the Tapanui Flat but better sport was obtained by sportsmen at Kelso. Two lecturers from the Home Science Extension Service, Misses Reid and Crowe, gave a demonstration at the

residence of Mrs A. Simmers, Waikois koi, to the members of the Women’s 1 Division and friends. Miss Reid spoke 1 on the importance of right diet, and r stressed the need for proper feeding, instancing the defective teeth of New i Zealanders. ’Miss Reid, also spoke of ’• the boxes sent out by the Home Science - Bureau, and two sample boxes were - handed round for inspection, one containing some beautiful examples of e smocking, and the other, samples of ] wool worked and teased by Home , Science students, and made into quilts.

- Miss Crowe then gave a demonstration s in attractive potato dishes. She first e showed potatoes rightly cooked in their d skins, and said potatoes should never ’, be peeled, as by so doing nutriment is v lost. She then made delicious savouries if from cooked potatoes, some containing e nuts, others tomato pulp etc. These e were sampled by the ladies and pro- - nounced delicious. At the conclusion f of the demonstration the president, Mrs f W. J. McKenzie, returned the thanks of e those present both for the interesting 5. address and the demonstration which

showed what could be done with the common potato. The thanks of the Women’s Division branches were due to these Home Science lecturers who came out to help country women by these lectures and demonstrations. Afternoon tea was then served, after which Mrs J. Robertson moved a vote of thanks to Mrs Simmers for the use of her kitchen.
