OTAUTAU NOTES

EUCHRE. (From Our Correspondent.) In spite of the rough weather 40 attended the euchre party on Monday evening. Miss E. Hassed was successful in winning the ladies’ prize with 22 points, Miss C. Peck being runner-ujo. Mr R. S. Harrington won in the mens section with 24 points, Mr L. Pulley taking second place with 23 points. Presbyterian Church.

Harvest festival services were conducted in the local Presbyterian Church on '' Sunday, when the boisterous weather affected the attendance considerably. The Rev. W. H. Howes, 8.A., preached appropriate sermons at both diets of worship, while in the evening the senior choir rendered the anthems, “The Earth is the Lord’s” and “Praise ye the Lord.” Hymns suitable to the occasion were also sung. Mr E. Jellyman presided at the organ. The produce was sold on Monday evening and realized full market values. Methodist Church.

The annual meeting of the Methodist Ladies’ Guild was held in the church on Thursday afternoon, when there was a good attendance. A motion of sympathy with Mrs R. S. James in her bereavement was passed. The following office-bearers were "elected for the ensuing year: President, Mrs Malcolm; vice-president, Mrs E. Harrington; secretary, Mrs S. H. Herron; recording secretary, Mrs Lightfoot. The retiring officers were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their services. A letter was received from Mrs Challenger thanking the members of the guild for the present forwarded, the writer stating she regretted her inability to return to Otautau to bid them farewell. It was resolved to hold a cake stall in Jaquiery’s buildings on May 12 to augment the funds. The question of holding a bazaar was discussed, and it was decided to hold the function on August 11. Dairy Factory. The milk at the Otautau dairy factory continues to hold up, despite the recent cold snap, the intake on April 30 being 2640 gallons, an increase of 240 gallons over the corresponding period of last year. At the same time 34 large cheese are being made per day, equal to lj tons per day. The cheese has been sold from January to the end of the SC Two' months ago a mechanical stoker was installed on trial. So . far the machine is giving satisfaction, and proves to show a saving of 25 per cent, on the fuel. Personal. Miss Donnan is spending a few days in Invercargill. Miss A. Wilson has returned from her holiday at Orawia. Miss Marion Swap, Oamaru, spent the week-end in Invercargill as the guest of Mrs Cheyne prior to spending the vacation with her mother, Mrs J. Swap, Merrivale road. Miss Shaw spent the week-end at the Rocks. Mrs Whipp is the guest of Mr and Mrs E. Jellyman. Miss F, Macdonald is home for the vacation. Town Board. The monthly meeting of the Otautau Town Board was held on Monday evening, when the following commissioners were present: Messrs A. A. Liddell (chairman), J. Scatter, J. Campbell, W. J. McCulloch, J. H. Smith, H. L. Chandler and E. Harrington. The building committee reported that it had declined Mr Pulley’s application on the plan submitted.—The action was approved. The foreman's report was received. The balance-sheet for the year ended March 31 was submitted by the clerk.—Received, and to be submitted for audit. ■ A telegram was received from the Hon. Adam Hamilton advising that until further definite detailed arrangements can be made he would be grateful if the board would co-operate with other local bodies in the district to receive, store and hold until advised later regarding distribution of any produce or other goods donated to the Governor-General’s relief fund, with the exception of live stock which he was asking the freezing companies, to accept.—The chairman said he had informed the clerk that there was plenty of room in Messrs J. E. Watson’s store for storage, but so far nothing had come along.—The letter was received. Mr E. T. Silverwood requested permission to complete a car shelter. — Granted. Mr E. Smith, returning officer for the combined boroughs and town districts, asked for information regarding the rateable unimproved value of the district, the number of electors, etc. The same writer notified that Mr W. McChesney, the only candidate, had been elected to represent these bodies on the Southland Electric Power Board, so that an election was unnecessary.—Received. Mr C. A. Harrington applied for the fall to be brought up to provide outfall for the drainage of his property in Catrine street.—lt was resolved that fall be taken up by unemployed labour, the question of larger pipes being left in the hands of the works committee. Mr James Campbell made application through the board to have the creek below Mr W. Fraser’s residence cleaned out and fall taken up under the No. 5 unemployment scheme.—lt was decided to apply to the local unemployment committee to have the work carried out. The Under-Secretary, Department ot Lands and Survey, Wellington, forwarded a letter and particulars regarding the lease of the Otautau Do-main-Resolved that the lease of the domain remain as it is. It was resolved that the foreman attend to the footpath in Harbison street and clear grass round the pillar box, and also replace defective plank in bridge. It was also decided to clear up all the footpaths, and that Queen and other streets be gravelled. The clerk reported that he had taken out a statement of the last five years lighting of the town with kerosene, and the first five years with electric light. The former had cost the town over £127, and the latter £97 odd, a direct saving to the board of £4O. The sum of £27 had been expended on crockery for the hall, and the sum of £172 had been received for the hire of same, which was a very good investment.
