The Rev. W. H. S. Hine, vicar of the Fortrose Anglican district, has. been appointed to the charge of the parochial district of Winton. Mr W. A. Hislop, sales manager for Universal Pictures in New Zealand, is at present on a visit to Invercargill and Southland districts. Mr A. J. Geddes, Southland delegate to the New Zealand Rugby Union, annual meeting at Wellington this week, leaves by the express this morning. Mr L. A. Paish, British Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, left London on his return to the Dominion, via Suez, on the Otranto, on April 29. Mr H. Ibbotson, of Hamilton, accompanied by his sister, Miss A. L. Ibbotson, of Invercargill, arrived in Invercargill by the express from Christchurch last evening. Recent arrivals at the Grand Hotel include Messrs F. Warren (Sydney), W. Kean (Balclutha), D. C. Mcßobie (Wellington), G. A. Taylor (Wellington), and D. Standage, L. Hudson and A. D. Strachan, of Dunedin. Among those at present staying at the Club Hotel are Messrs H. D. Smith and C. D. Bell, of Dunedin, W. J. Graham, C. Cowan, C. Tennent and M. McKee, of Christchurch, and Captain Dowe of Lyttelton. The death occurred on Sunday of an old resident of the Wrights Bush district, Mr George Anderson, in his 86th year. The deceased had been a resident of the district for many years, and was a noted breeder of cattle and sheep, his herd of Shorthorn cattle obtaining prizes throughout Otago and Southland. The late Mr Anderson took an active interest in agricultural matters, and was one of the oldest members of the Western District A. and P. Association. He is survived by a widow and five of a family—three sons and two daughters.

Lieutenant-Commander R. F. Nichols, who has been transferred to the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, has arrived at Wellington to join H.M.S. Dunedin at Auckland. LieutenantCommander Nichols first joined H.M.S. Vanguard as midshipman, serving in May, 1917. For five months in 1925 he served as assistant navigator in H.M.S. Royal Oak in the Atlantic Fleet, and for 18 months from January, 1926, he was navigator in H.M.S. Bluebell in China. During 1929 he was assistant navigator on H.M.S. Hood (Atlantic Fleet), and assistant navigator on H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth (Mediterranean Fleet). From August, 1930, to February, 1933, he served as navigator and first lieutenant-commander of H.M.S. Danae, on the American and West Indies stations.

' The death occurred on Monday of Mr Edwin Albert Pyrke at his residence, North-East Valley, states the Otago Daily Times. Mr Pyrke was bom in London 84 years ago and came out to New Zealand when he was 21 years of age. He commenced business almost immediately on his arrival with Mr Hargan, under the style of Messrs Pyrke and Hargan, wholesale spirit merchants, and was later providore on the boats of the Union Steam Ship Company. Subsequently he travelled for Messrs Esther and Low, general merchants, and was then occupied in a similar capacity with Messrs William Neill and Company. He then joined Messrs Strachan and Company, with whom he was associated for about 25 years as a traveller, principally in the North Island. In later years he was admitted into partnership with Mr C. A. Wilson, who formed the Wilson Malt Extract Company, of which Mr Pyrke was a director until the time of his death.
