ENGLISH SUGAR BEET
PROGRESS IN INDUSTRY. The sugar-beet industry, which t few years ago was only in the experimental stage in Britain, has lately been progressing by leaps and bounds, and this year a particularly fine crop of roots has been raised. Large consignments are already In the hands of the sugar factories, and crushing shows a large percentage of sugar. At. the Cantley factory, in Norfolk, 1500 tons of beet are being crushed daily, and Britain alone has grown more than 15,000 acres of beet this year. There are now 14 beet sugar factories in. various parts of the kingdom, while more than 125,000 acres are devoted to beet-growing for sugar purposes. Statistics show that Britain is annually becoming more self-support-ing in the matter of sugar Supplies.
