BASKETBALL

CENTRAL DISTRICT. LAST WEEK’S GAMES. (By “Shoot.”) All games set down for decision last Wednesday were decided. Lochiel and Kia Ora have each a success to their credit. Ryal Bush and Orcti played an interesting game, which resulted m a draw, 19 all. . Limehills are not as strong this season as they have been in the past. Lochiel have quite a formidable side, but the shooting of the forwards will have to ipiprove considerably. Browns junior A team scored a decisive victory over Ryal Bush last week, while two other teams that were prominent in last season’s junior competition—Lochiel and Spar Bush also won their respective matches. Rovers juniors had a great struggle with Hedgehope at Winton, the final scores being 17 —15 in favour of the home side. .... The win of Lochiel over Limehuls was not impressive and the game for the best part was of a ragged nature. The home team were the aggressors practically throughout and although the field work of their forwards was quite good their accuracy as far as shooting went was poor. The home centre trio worked particularly well and frequently made good openings, while the defence line was very solid and gave the opposing forwards few chances. The Limehills forwards made the most, of the few openings they had, while the defence line . also infused plenty of dash into their work. The Ryal Bush—Lochiel game on the former’s courts this week should provide an interesting contest while the meeting of Oreti and Kia Ora at Oreti will also attract attention. Ryal Bush, last season’s winners of the junior section, made a good opening in their first senior match by drawing with Oreti. Both teams gave good displays, the accuracy of the forwards being worthy of note. In the first half the home side were superior, but in the second, half Ryal Bush monopolized play to even up the scores in an exciting finish. The Lochiel team this season is much the same as that fielded. last year. Their forward line—J. Cowie, P. Clark and H. Clark—has been retained and this trio is capable of holding its own against any in the district. Their spoiling tactics are particularly good, while they possess a thorough understanding. C. Atkinson will be missed from the wing-centre position, but M. Irwin, who has been promoted from junior status, is quite capable and likely to improve. The other wing-centre is E. Miles, while in the centre position M. Forbes is a decided asset as she handles admirably and frequently makes good openings. D. Munro and F. Irwin are both again taking part in the forward third, while M. Robb is a newcomer. This trio failed dismally as far as shooting went last week but their field work was quite good. However they will have to do much better. Several changes have taken place in the Limehills team. A. Tippett who played for High School last year, is an asset in the forward third and her accuracy last week against Lochiel was a feature of the game. Championship Points. The position of the teams in the senior and junior sections is as follows: — Senior.
