THE SUEZ CANAL
PLEA FOR REDUCED TOLLS. EMPIRE PROSPERITY AFFECTED. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, May 7. The Sunday Express describes the Suez Canal as one of the greatest barriers to Empire prosperity, and says the British Treasury has persistently failed to support the shipowners’ demands for a reduction of the tolls. Fifty-six per cent, of the shipping using the canal is British and six per cent. French, yet France holds the balance of power. The only hope of any reduction being granted is that the British Government will appeal to Egypt, which is empowered to call an international conference on the subject.
