DEVOTION TO SISTER
WOMAN REFUSES MARRIAGE. The moving story of a woman who renounced marriage in order to fulfil a vow to her blind sister came to light following the tragedy in England recently of two elderly sisters, one aged 79 and the other 70, both of whom died within a week. The younger woman, Miss Kate Pethridge, had been afflicted with blindness almost from childhood, and because of this the elder sister, Miss E. Pethridge, vowed, when still a young girl, to spend her life looking after her. This self-imposed task she carried out with unfailing devotion for over 60 years. When a girl she refused many proposals of marriage because of her vow, one of the suitors belonging to a titled family. During 14 years the sisters resided at Ilfracombe the elder’s devotion to the younger was observed by almost everyone, and it was particularly noticed that she never spared herself in her self-imposed task.
