WORLD PROBLEMS

ECONOMIC CONFERENCE RAMSAY MACDONALD’S VIEWS DISCUSSIONS AT WASHINGTON (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, May 5.

Mr Ramsay MacDonald, broadcasting in regard to his American visit, declared that if Britain tried to make herself economically self-sufficing the population must be reduced by migrating millions even to maintain the present standard of living. This would not be possible for years. The alternative was devastating destitution. The International Conference must agree upon sound tariff principles, the removal of obstructive devices like restriction of currency movements, keep the exchange Value steady, and provide work for millions of decent people now idle. He and President Roosevelt candidly discussed the Anglo-American attitude to war debts, which was a hard nut still uncracked.

Representatives of the British Government, the dominions, and the colonies are periodically conferring prior to the World Conference. They exchange views on commercial, economic, and agricultural matters, but no monetary policy. THE DEBTS QUESTION. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 1 p.m.) London, May 6. Mr Macdonald, in a broadcast speech, said that the world conference would fail unless the debts question was settled as early as possible, certainly before the termination of the conference. He and Mr Roosevelt were agreed upon that.
