POPULAR TEACHER FAREWELLED. (From Our Correspondent.) After having served as assistant teacher at the Tuturau School for the last four and a-half years, Miss. I. Pollock who has received an appointment to the staff of the Gore School, was tendered a farewell social in the hall at Tuturau on Thursday evening, when there was a very large attendance of district residents present to do honour to her. Mr J. H. Galt (chairman of the school committee) said they were Sphered to bid farewell to one who had done splendid work in the school during her stay. Whilst they regretted her departure, they were glad to know she was seeking well earned promotion, and the residents felt they could not let the occasion pass without showing in tangible form the esteem in which she was held. He had great pleasure in asking Miss Pollock to accept a travelling rug and with it went the very best wishes for success in her new sphere. (Applause). A delightful little ceremony then took place, and as Miss Pollock stepped to the platform a scholar (Joyce Mortimer) presented her with a bouquet of flowers, which Miss Pollock gratefully accepted. On behalf of the pupils Elinor Galt was deputed to make a presentation of a fountain pen to the departing teacher, and in a few well chosen words the little girl performed her duty charmingly. Miss Pollock acknowledged the kind sentiments expressed concerning her. She had enjoyed her stay amongst them and she thanked them for the hospitality she had received in the homes of the parents. She was grateful, too, for the friends she had made whilst in Tuturau. She concluded by thanking the gathering for the presents given her. Musical honours were then accorded the guest of honour. Prior to the presentation an acceptable programme of musical and elocutionary items was given by local talent. Subsequently the floor was cleared for dancing to music by Miss Winter (piano), and Messrs D. Collie (accordeon), and D. Muir (violin). Mr Alex. Christie made an efficient M.C. Highland Ball. The first Annual Ball held under the auspices of the. Mataura Kilties’ Band was held in the Horticultural Hall on Friday evening, and was an unqualified success in every way, the spacious building being crowded. Included in the gathering were members of the Gore and Balfour Pipe Bands who had come to assist the Mataura bandsmen in the musical programme. Oddfellows Lodge. In the Oddfellows Hall on Thursday evening the Mataura Oddfellows Lodge, 1.0.0. F., No. 40, held its usual fortnightly meeting, a large attendance of brethren greeting N.G. Bro. L. Shrimpton, when he took the chair. A large amount of routine business having been disposed of, a contingent of brethren from the White Flower Encampment of Invercargill was admitted and warmly welcomed by the presiding officers. Suitable fraternal response was made by one of the visitors. Sabbath School Social. In the Presbyterian Church Hall on Friday evening the minister (Rev. D. McNeur) and teachers of the Sabbath School entertained the scholars and their parents to a social evening, when the children had an enjoyable time with games and competitions. A large amount of credit is due to Rev. D. McNeur and Messrs L. Currie and L. Scarlet for organizing the games, the zeal with which the children entered into them indicating their pleasure.
