GORE DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB

COMMITTEE MEETS. The Gore Defence Rifle Club held a meeting .on Friday evening, Mr J. Mathews presiding over a good attendance of members. Before the commencement of business, the president moved a vote of condolence and sympathy with the relatives of the late Mrs McLennan, McNab. Mrs McLennan had done a great deal of work to assist the finances of the club in its early stages.—The motion was passed by the members standing in silence for a few moments. A letter was received from the Southland Rifle Association stating that a meeting of the association would be held at Invercargill on Wednesday evening. Messrs Preece and Wilson were appointed delegates. Mr D. S. McLeod signified that he would present a small silver shield to the club for competition.—Accepted with thanks, and allotted to the final shoot of the season, 15 shots at 600 yards. Mr J. Mathews handed in his resignation as president, owing to his forthcoming removal to Dunedin. Mr Mathews stated that he very much regretted having to sever his connection with the club, but he was pleased that the finances were in a healthy state. He would ever remember with pleasure the times he had spent on the range. Mr Preece moved that Mr Mathews’ resignation be accepted with deep regret. He stated that the club would miss the guiding hand of Mr Mathews, . who had started the club and had made it his business to see that it prospered. Mr Mathews’ resignation was the most painful matter that the club had so far experienced. Mr Mathews presented a silver button to the club, expressing a wish that this be handed to and worn by the member making the highest score off the rifle each week. This was accepted with thanks and handed to Mr C. M. Wilson, who had made the best score this week. It was decided that Mr S. Preece, senior vice-president, act as president until the annual meeting next month.
