DARING ESCAPE
THREE PRISONERS CAREFULLY PLANNED MOVE WARDER THREATENED (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, April 23. Three prisoners escaped from the Waikune sub-prison camp, 16 miles south of Turangi, on Friday morning. The escapees are Eugene Charles Dominic McCarthy, aged 25, serving a sentence of three years, Basil Hodgson, aged 26, serving a sentence of two years and Vincent Barney Reardon, aged 30, serving a sentence of two years. The three men reported sick and, with the warder in charge were the only occupants of the camp • on Friday morning. The escape had apparently been carefully planned. Hodgson and Reardon, who were occupying the same dormitory, smashed open a locked door with a camp stool and were joined in the open by McCarthy, who escaped from his cell by climbing through a window. The three men armed themselves with sticks and threatened the warder in charge with violence if he attempted to stop them. 'The men then headed down a disused National Park—Taupo road. An intensive search was organized and it was reported late this afternoon that one prisoner, whose name is not available, was recaptured at Hihitahi, between Waiouru and Taihape.
