It was a very happy thought that prompted the committee of the Music Circle of the Southland Women’s Club to open their season with an informal evening of plans and music. Last night the big fires in the reception room cast a cheerful warmth and glow over a large gathering of members who sat round fires and tables and listened to a programme taken from the music of the Highlands and Islands, repeated from last year after numerous requests. In a preliminary talk, Mrs Stanley Brown, chairwoman of the circle, welcomed new members, and stated the object of beginning the season with an informal evening—that members should have this opportunity of getting to know one another, and to proffer ideas on the lines these evenings should take. “Remember, a circle is round,” she said. “Performers and audience should be one in one large circle. A number of people gathered together in the name of music.” Before her dissertation on Hebridean music, Mrs Brown referred to the great loss the Circle would sustain in the departure of Mrs- L. B. Rowe, who leaves shortly to take up residence in Nelson. The following was the programme:—“A Fairy’s Love Song”—Mrs H. R. Kingsland, solo—Miss W. Thom, “Eriskay Love Lilt”—Mrs A. T.
