GOLF

THE GORE CLUB. CANADIAN FOURSOME. The Canadian foursome held on the East Gore links on Thursday evening for the Kerse trophy attracted a splendid gathering of summer golf enthusiasts, 48 participating. Fine but windy weather prevailed, but did not mar the pleasantness of the evening, while some good cards were returned. The closeness of the scoring occasioned considerable interest, and at one stage it was thought that a tie had eventuated. The last card of the evening, however, proved the winner. The best gross score was that of Finlayson and Mrs F. V. Piper, who did rounds of 37 and 41. which included three birdies and four bogeys. The first round comprised 63544354 3—37, a fine effort for a mixed foursome. Other good rounds were Crosbie and Mrs Boult, 41 and 39; F. D. Scott and Miss M. Rodgers 42 and 39; J. A. S. Aitken and Mrs Sinclair, 41 and 41. Details:— W Young and Miss E. Johnston 88— 25—63. E. J. Crosbie and Mrs Boult 80 —15— 65. A. B. Caverhill and Mrs J. Ross gg 23 65 R. Ritchie and Mrs Kirby 88—21—67. J. A. S. Aitken and Mrs Piper 78— 11—67. Sinclair and Mrs Wilson 91—24—67. F. Young and C. L. King 83—15—68. At the conclusion the trophies were presented to W. Young and Miss Johnston by Mr Kerse. The opportunity was then taken of farewelling Mr Kerse, who leaves shortly for Masterton. To mark the occasion the club president, Mr Robert Fisher, presented Mr Kerse and Mrs A. E. Boult with a golf ball each, this pair having won the first match of the season. Mr Fisher thanked the club members for the invitation extended to him to be present, and also thanked the ladies for the excellent tea arrangements. Summer golf had been wonderfully successful, and it was to be regretted that the club was losing one of its keenest members in Mr Kerse, who displayed the same enthusiasm and energy in anything with which he was connected, and who had contributed to making summer golf successful. He wished him every prosperity and happiness in the future. Mr Kerse thanked the club members for the many kindnesses he had always received, which would cause him to miss greatly the pleasant Thursday evenings on the East Gore links. He wished the club all success and prosperity in the future.
