SERIES OF BURGLARIES

PRISON ESCAPEES RECAPTURED. (Per United Press Association.) Tc Awamutu, December 23. Two escapees from Hautu prison camp last February—Edgar William Allen, alias Roy Norris, and Charles Bennett —appeared before justices to answer many charges of breaking, entering, and theft of goods and cash from stores at Ohaupu, Te Awamutu, Pirongoa, Otorohanga, and Mahoenui during their period of liberty. They pleaded guilty to all charges. On the five principal charges Bennett was committed to the Auckland Supreme Court for sentence and on the minor charges was sentenced to eighteen months. Another charge of theft of jewellery, etc., at Waverley, was preferred against Bennett, who was remanded to Wanganui. Allen had been dealt with on many other charges soon after his recapture last April in the Wanganui district. Bennett was recaptured a fortnight ago in the Te Kuiti district.
