GOLF

N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS PROFESSIONAL AND AMATEUR FOURSOMES BLACK BROTHERS RETAIN TITLE (Per United Press Association.) Heretaunga, November 3. The New Zealand golf championship meeting opened at Heretaunga to-day. The course is looking its best. The fairways are green and grassy, being neither fast nor slow, and the putting greens have just sufficient keenness to make them interesting. The weather conditions this morning were excellent, the day being sunny, with a fairly strong north-west wind blowing across the course. It was not sufficient to disturb accuracy, but was quite enough to make the careful playing of shots essential. To-day was an easy day, being devoted to the professional and amateur championship foursomes. Morning Round. The professionals set out first, the first pair leaving the tee at 9 o’clock and the last at 9.35. The first amateurs, Liddle and Hurst and Fryer and Troutbeck set out ten minutes later. Among the professionals Moss and Rutter had sixes at the 7th and 13th. Neither was at his best, but they are expected to improve this afternoon. J. A. Clements and Douglas were out in 37 and back in 36. A six at the second was made up by twos at the third and fifteenth. Dyke and Fuller were out and in in similai* figures with a six at the eighth. Momentary forgetfulness cost Branch and Blair two strokes. Branch at the second missed a putt, leaving a short one which he knocked in, whereas his partner should have played. As among the professionals the best amateur cards were 73, these being returned by J. P. Hornabrook and T. H, Horton, of Wairarapa, and the Black brothers. Hornabrook and Horton were very steady. The card read:— Out-4 4 4 4 3 4 4 5 4—36 In—s 4 4 5 3 3 4 5 4-37 The Blacks’ card read:— Out-4 4 3 5 3 5 4 5 3—36 In 4 4 5 5 3 3 4 5 4—37 Afternoon Play. The afternoon conditions were a continuance of those of the morning except that the breeze was somewhat stronger. The professional foursomes were won by J. A. Clements and Douglas, who returned an afternoon card of 72 making their total 145, the same score as that of A. J. Shaw and James Watt when they won this event at Shirley last year. They were out in 37 and back in 35 this afternoon, the figures being:— Out—4 4 3 5 3 5 4 6 3—37 1n—44453344 4—35 C. C. Clements and J. Forrest were second with an aggregate of 148, a card of 72 in the afternoon accounting for this. They had 36 each way, the figures being:—

Out—4 4 3 6 3 3 5 4 4—36 In -1 5 4 4 3 3 4 5 4—36 At the fourth they had a six, but this was more than amended by a three at the sixth. Interest in the amateur event naturally centred itself in two pairs, Hornabrook and Horton and the two Blacks, who in addition to the fact that they had retained 73’s in the morning were playing together and consequently drew the only gallery that has so far appeared on the course. The gallery was rewarded with a display of excellent golf and a contest which was in doubt till the last shot was played, the Blacks retaining the title by a stroke. Three putts on the first green put the Blacks down a stroke, but the Wairarapa pair took six at the next and matters were level. The play was in and out to the turn, where the Blacks were a stroke behind. A beautiful chip by Horton enabled Hornabrook to hole in three at the tenth and the Blacks were two behind, one of which J. L. Black regained with a 35-foot putt at the eleventh. The Wairarapa pair went ahead again at the twelfth and again at the 13th, which was a tragedy for the Blacks, J. L. Black failing to recover from a bunker and the hole costing six against four to the Masterton pair. The latter lost a stroke at the next and no fewer than three at the fifteenth, where a six appeared against a perfect three by the other pair. Hornabrook missed a great chance to take the lead by missing a three-footer at the seventeenth. At the eighteenth the third shots were only four feet and three feet from the pin, but Horton missed and J. L. Black sank his. The Blacks’ round was 75 and the Wairarapa pair’s 76. The cards read:— J. L. and H. A. Black. Out—s 5 3 4 4 4 4 5 4—38 In —43563345 4—37 Horton and Hornabrook. Out—4 63 4 3 4 6 4 3—37 In —3 4444645 5—39 J. D. G. and M. H Duncan crashed badly in the afternoon round which took them 85—a big lapse from 73 in the morning. An interesting pair were A. D. S. Duncand and Dr K. Ross. Duncan was a little off at times, but played some fine shots. Ross showed good form. Following are the scores:— Professional Foursomes Championship.
