ROYAL SHOW

JUDGING COMPLETED. HIGH PRICE FOR SHEEP. (Per United Press Association.) Palmerston North, November 3. The second day of the Royal Show was fine but dull. The judging of all classes was completed this morning when there was another large attendance. The attractions include jumping and steer-riding with a grand parade of all animals. Additional championships are: Large Black Pigs—Boar, D. and S. Ross, Te Puke; reserve, G. M. Whitelock, Palmerston North. Sow —G. M. Whitelock; reserve, Messrs Ross. ‘‘We expect at a Royal Show to find the best and we had them. The display of Southdown sheep would be hard to beat in any part of the world, in fact two or three English sheep there failed to get a front seat.” This was the comment made by the judge, Mr W. J. Jenkins, of Sheffield (Canterbury), in reviewing the open classes for Southdown sheep at the Show. “The awards were allocated among several exhibitors,” he added, indicating that dominance was not the monopoly of one stud flock. “I doubt if better quality has ever been seen at any Royal Show in New Zealand. It is some years since I last judged at this centre. I believe that the wool has improved during that time.” All the principal awards in the Southdown open classes were annexed by the Manawatu district. At a sale of Royal Show stud stock, Mr W. A. MacFarlane’s champion cow was purchased at 200 guineas for a New South Wales breeder. Mr M. L. O’Neill’s (Hastings) reserve champion Jersey cow was bought by Dr Walker, of Whangarei, for 130 guineas.
