OBITUARY

MR MALCOLM MOUAT, SEN. As each season goes by, some page in the life history of our early pioneers is completed by Death taking its toll as such it did in the case of Mr Malcolm Mouat, sen., who passed away on Tuesday evening at his home “Braeview,” Eastern Bush. One of the earliest pioneers of the West beyond the Waiau, Mr Mouat, who was held in the highest esteem and respect, will long remain in the minds of those who knew him for his remarkable character. Hailing from the Shetland Islands north of the British Isles, Mr Mouat commenced his work on the stations of the Waiau district as a young man where the outstanding qualities of his character very quickly were manifested. Of a trustworthy, reliable, conscientious and genial nature, he soon became attached to all, respected by his employer, liked by his fellowmen, and the idol of the children. •Later when Mr Mouat acquired the properties of “Woodlands” and the present “Braeview” property, he was married to Miss Scobie. As the years rolled by, Mr Mouat as a quiet peaceful and retiring citizen, was very reticient to speak of the part he played in the long ago, but to those of his intimate friends, now and then, he would mention his experiences of shepherding sheep out to the Princess Mountains, of the great snowfall of the 70’s, of making rafts to cross the rivers, of the hardships encountered in those days, but always the praise for his fellow associations predominated, and, wherever possible, he made little of that part he played—truly a fine characteristic in a man. For hospitality he was renowned, while towards all functions both local and in the surrounding districts —Mr Mouat was always ready to assist. A man with all these outstanding qualities could not but cause one to realize the high esteem in which he was held. His family are Mrs Mouat sen., “Braeview,” Mr William Mouat (Eastern Bush), Mr Malcolm Mouat jun. (Eastern Bush), Mr Magnus Mouat (Woodlands), Mrs W. Durie (Gympie, Australia), Mrs P. Scott (Otahu), Mrs J, Scott (Feldwick) and Mrs H. McLean (Clifden).
