TOWN CLERK
MR STURMAN APPOINTED ASSUMES OFFICE NEXT YEAR UNANIMOUS CHOICE At a special meeting of the Invercargill City Council last evening Mr W. F. Sturman, at present Town Clerk of Petone, was unanimously appointed Town Clerk of Invercargill. He assumes office at the beginning of next year. Mr Sturman has been with the Petone Borough Council for the past 20 years. Born in London in 1890, he came to New Zealand with his parents, Mr and Mrs Walter Sturman, in 1900, They landed in Wellington, but went to settle in the Hawkes Bay district. Tn 1908 Mr Sturman took a position in a commercial office in Woodville, and later joined the Woodville Borough Council office staff. He was assistant town clerk there, and in 1912 moved to Petone, where he was assistant Town Clerk for eight years, when he was appointed to his present position. In addition to being Town Clerk, by arrangement between the council and the bodies concerned, he was secretary and treasurer of the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board, the Petone Fire Board, and the Hutt Park Committee. Mr Sturman plays golf and is an active member of the Petone Tennis Club. Mrs Sturman, who was formerly Miss Nancy Curtis, the ex-New Zealand and Australian tennis champion, is an ardent tennis player, and does a great deal of coaching of promising players from the schools. For the last two years Mrs Sturman has won the women’s mid-week golf championship at the Shandon Golf Club. Mr and Mrs Sturman have two sons, John and David, who are attending school at Petone.
