TRAFFIC IN OPIUM
SEAMAN HEAVILY FINED. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, November 2. Peter Joseph McGavin, aged 35, a seaman, was to-day fined £225 for importing opium and £25 for having it in his possession, in default six months’ imprisonment. The Collector of Customs said McGavin arrived last August from Samoa in the Maui Pomare and brought five tins of prepared opium. He was about to dispose of it last night when he was arrested. The opium had been bought very cheaply in Samoa. In view of the large traffic in opium the Collector asked for a heavy penalty.
