FAREWELL SOCIAL. (From Our Correspondent.) Mr A. Black has sold his property at Tapanui to Mr A. Winslade. A . farewell social to Mr and Mrs Black, who are going to their farm at Glenkenich, was held in the Oddfellows Hall, Tapanui, on Friday evening. Progressive euchre was played during the evening, Miss Jean Blamires and Mr J. A. McDonald winning first prize. Musical items were given by Miss Murphy, Messrs Simmonds, Edgar and A. Potts, the accompaniments being played by Miss Potts, and Mesdames Grace and Cockerill. Before the supper interval, the chairman (Mr W. B. Eskdale) asked Mrs J. A. McDonald to present to Mrs Black a beautiful handbag containing money, and a necklace and a book to each of the Misses Black (3). Mr J. S. Edgar then presented a shaving outfit to Mr Black, and expressed the best wishes of their Tapanui friends to Mr and Mrs Black and family for theis health and happiness. Mr Black suitably replied. The hall was then cleared for dancing. Mr John Black injured his hand while driving a drill on his farm at Glenkenick . owing to a swingle-tree breaking. The rim pinched part of the forefinger off. After Dr. Robertson had attended to the injury, Mr Black had another portion of the finger amputated in Dunedin, but is now progressing satisfactorily. Mr John Campbell died on Monday morning at his residence, Tapanui. Mr Campbell, who had been ill for a considerable time, was a member of Loyal Tapanui Lodge for many years. He was a keen gardener, and spent much time in the cultivation and propagation of plants and flowers. The Rev. W. H. Norton conducted the funeral services at the house and at Tapanui cemetery on Tuesday. Mr Camubell, who was 75 years of age, leaves a widow and son (Mr W. Campbell. Dunedin), with whom great sympathy is felt. The Kelso P.W.M.U. and Ladies’ Guild held a sock and apron social in the Kelso Presbyterian Church on Wednesday. A good musical nrogramme was given. Anthems, Kelso Choir; dialogue, Glenkenich girls; Soring Song, Kelso Young Worshippers’ League; songs, Mrs Norton, Glenkenich girls, Miss C. Kitching, Kelso girls; duet, Messrs McFadgen and J. Mclntosh; recitations, B. Kerse, D. Buchanan; dialogue, Kelso girls; Missionary pageant, Glenkenich P.W.M.U. The social proved very successful, the sum of £l2 12/- being realized. The Farmers’ Union at Dunrobin on Saturday were addressed by Mr A. C. Cameron, secretary Otago N.Z.F.U., who spoke on the Farmers’ Union and matters affecting the farmer before introducing Mr Malloch, who dealt with farmers’ accounts and book-keeping. The Women’s Division branch also held a meeting at the same time, when Mrs Drake, president of the Otago W.D., addressed the ladies present. Mrs Drake spoke of the work done by the W.D., and also of the July conference. The Farmers’ Union members were then entertained to supper by the W.D members. The annual social was held by the Crookston Church in the hall on Wednesday evening. The Rev. J. B. Bickerstaff expressed his pleasure at seeing such a large congregation present. He then introduced a party from Edendale who were to give the musical part of the programme. Pianoforte duet, Miss I. Cranston, Miss A. Jenkins; song, “Joybird.” Mrs Monagan; duet, “Night of Love,” Miss Granston, Mr Samson; recitation, “Dad and the Boy.” the Rev. R. D. McEwan; duet, “Until,” Mrs Monagan, Mr Sansom; song, “Hundred Pipers,” Mr Sansom; scenes from the “Heart of Midlothian,” Mrs McEwan, Jennie Deans, Miss Granstoun, Queen Caroline; the Rev. R. D. McEwan, The Laird and Duke of Carlyle; humorous recitation. Misses Jenkins and Granstoun; song, “Sergeant-Major on Parade,” Mr Sansom; songs, Miss Granstoun and Mrs Monagan. The Rev. R. D. McEwan and Mr Sansom gave short addresses. The Rev. J. B. Bickerstaff moved a hearty vote of thanks to the Rev. R. D. McEwan, Mr Sansom and party, who had given such an excellent and enjoyable concert programme. He also thanked the ladies who provided supper, and also all who had helped- with the social arrangements. A euchre tournament and dance was held on Wednesday evening in the Oddfellows Hall, Tapanui, as a final to the Cricket Club socials. Mrs D. Kane, and Mr M. McAuley won the prizes for the evening’s euchre, the highest aggregate prizes going to Mr and Mrs J. A. McDonald. Before supper, Mr W. J. Spittle presented the shield won by the Tapanui Club, and congratulated them on their success. The captain, Mr D. Gunn, in replying, wished to specially thank the ladies who had supported the club all through the season, and as a mark of appreciation Mrs D. Kane was asked to hold the trophy. Mrs Kane thanked the club for this honour, and said anything the ladies had done had been a pleasure. Special mention was made of the services of Mrs Grace, pianiste for the dances, and she was presented with a token of appreciation.
