VERITY’S DAY

A STICKY WICKET COMBINED TEAM FAILS BRADMAN DISAPPOINTS o (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) Perth, October 30. The rain held off and stiff south westerly drying the wicket was in evidence for the resumption of the match between the Englishmen and a combined Australian team. The wicket wap still very soft and wet for play. Bradman was dismissed by a wonderful catch by Hammond, who held the ball although he fell in doing so. Verity was brilliant, making the ball rise on the pitch. He took six wickets for 23 runs in his first spell at the crease, the sticky wicket eminently suiting him. Later his figures stood at seven for 37, including Bradman first ball.

The Combined team’s innings, provided a procession. Bradman in his first essay got two off the first ball and a single from the next. He deflected the first ball from Verity off the bat to second slip where Hammond was waiting. McCabe alone outplayed the bowlers, only striking loose ones. In the second innings Allen was given the bowling. Bradman again failed. He was apparently uncomfortable on the sticky wicket and gave an easy catch to Pataudi. The improving wicket gave Fingleton an opportunity and he rattled up a sparkling half century, but generally the display throughout was disappointing and no criterion of the merits of the players. The attendance was 20,000 and the gate receipts £1590. The Englishmen leave to-night for Adelaide. The scores were: COMBINED AUSTRALIAN. First Innings. DELIGHT IN LONDON BRADMAN’S DOWNFALL. (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) Sydney, October 30. A London message to the Sun says that the Evening News thus expresses delight at Bradman’s downfall: Verity, the demon bowler, terrorizes Australians. The mighty Bradman, the cricketing idol of Australia, stands revealed as an idol with clay feet. Bradman the scoring machine, the non-stop batsman who can’t be bowled, made 13 runs in two innings.
