BALFOUR NOTES

WOMEN’S DIVISION OF N.Z. FARMERS’ UNION. (From Our Correspondent.) The October meeting of the W.D.F.U. was held on Thursday afternoon, Mrs D. R. McTaggart presiding over an attendance of sixteen ladies. A motion of sympathy to Mr J. R. Keown and family was passed. The following appreciation was minuted: “Our branch has received an irreparable loss through the death of one of our most valued members in the person of Mrs J. R. Keown. The late Mrs Keown joined up at the inception of the branch and was one of our first vice-presidents and a most enthusiastic worker for the division. Her unfailing helpfulness and generosity contributed in a large measure to the success of the branch and her passing will be sadly felt by all our members." After routine business had been disposed of a home science box on the making of loose covers and lamp shades was studied and many useful hints derived therefrom. The tennis match, Balfour versus Riversdale, to have been played at Balfour on Saturday afternoon was postponed on account of the inclement weather. The local club was represented at the tennis tournaments held at Winton and Gore on Labour Day. At Winton the youthful Wilson sisters reached the finals of the ladies’ doubles to be beaten by the narrow margin of one game. The Presbyterian Sunday School picnic was held on the Caledonian grounds on Monday afternoon under ideal weather conditions. The committee of the local tennis club has every reason to be satisfied | with the result of the leap year dance held on Labour night. The hall was comfortably filled with dancers from all the surrounding districts and the Bluebird Orchestra dispensed excellent music. The first half of the programme was in the hands of the ladies who made the most of their opportunities. After supper the men took over and carried on well into the small hours. Patrons were unanimous in their praise of the orchestra. As a result of the function the local club’s funds will benefit by a useful sum. The supply of milk at the local factory is increasing daily and the second vat will soon be in use. Farmers state that this is the best season for a good number of years and stock generally is in good condition. Week-end guests at the Longridge Hotel included Miss J. Haub and Mr L. Fairhorn, of Dunedin, and Mr R. S. Edgar, of Gore. Mrs C. R. Bamsdale, of Invercargill, and her small son, spent the week-end at Balfour as the guests of Mrs A. O. Henderson.
