CROPS RUINED
STORMS IN QUEENSLAND BIG HAILSTONES SMASH WINDOWS HOUSE ROOFS DENTED (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Brisbane, October 10. Several centres in the Darling Downs were visited at the week-end by severe storms. About 7000 acres of wheat were flattened, fruit trees and vines were stripped, hundreds of windows were broken, and many roofs of homes pierced. A terrific hailstorm over the northern suburbs of Brisbane caused extensive damage. Hailstones measuring up to 2| inches across dented the roofs, crashed through windows, and killed poultry. Hoods of motor cars caught in the storm looked as if they had been under machine-gun fire. One piece of ice weighed a quarter of a pound. A city-bound train had every window shattered on the weather side. The passengers sought shelter under the seats. The engine-driver was stunned by a hailstone, and a woman on Nudgee railway station was also struck down.
