BAIL REFUSED

GRAVE CHARGE AGAINST DOCTOR. (Per United Press Association-) Auckland, October 10. George Frederick Hewer, aged 39, a medical practitioner, who has already been charged with illegally using an instrument on a young woman appeared in the Police Court to-day on a charge of killing the woman’s infant, a male child, thereby committing homicide. The police strenuously opposed an apulication for bail, Counsel for the defence contended that it was not a charge of murder in the ordinary sense. The police said it was technically murder. Counsel said he did not think there had been a similar case in England for fifty years. The Magistrate refused to grant bail till he had consulted the Crown Solicitor and remanded Hewer till tomorrow.
