NO FLORAL TRIBUTES.
To the Editor.
Sir.—lt is not to be wondered at that Invercargill enjoys the reputation of being one of the favourite resorts of the world’s leading platform artists when one considers the rousing reception given to Madam Galli-Curci on the occasion of her recent performance in the Municipal Theatre. The gorgeous stage setting which was revealed to the ravenous eyes of the audience as the curtain rose, the ocean of flowers (no doubt provided by one of the ladies’ organizations of Invercargill) and the hundred and one other indications , of. a warm welcome—all these must doubtless have raised the spirit of Galli-Curci as she stepped on to our celebrated platform. The “Municipal Scenery” in all its costly simplicity has already been referred to by your reporter though he omits allusion to the kaleidoscopic display of floral bouquets so much in evidence at the conclusion of the performance. The custom of rising before the National Anthem is played and of turning one’s back to the platform as the artist makes his or her final entry marks a new departure in the history of theatre etiquette.—l am etc.,
BORAX.
