WOMEN’S GOLF

N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS OF FIRST ROUND MRS DIXON DEFEATED (Per United Press Association.) Timaru, October 7. The first round of the New Zealand women’s golf championship was played this morning under entirely satisfactory weather conditions, and as on the opening day the play aroused a great deal of interest and enthusiasts followed the progress of games with unusual keenness. Miss J Horwell (Timaru), won a notable victory, heavily defeating a seasoned opponent in Mrs Gamble (Otago). Miss Horwell is only 18 and is competing at her first Dominion championship. She drove well and her putting was exceptionally accurate. Miss Fleming, of the Christchurch Club, and a triple champion, went down to Mrs Collinson (Manawatu), the game ending at the 15th. The keenest contest was between Miss Macfarlane and Mrs Dixon (Invercargill), the former making a great recovery after being four down at the 13th. Results:— First Round. Miss F. Pringle (Timaru) beat Miss Theomin (Otago), 4 and 3. Mrs H. Collinson (Manawatu), beat Miss V. Fleming (Christchurch), 5 and 3. Miss J. Horwell (Timaru) beat Mrs Gamble (Otago), 6 and 5. Miss E. Macfarlane (Christchurch) beat Mrs Dixon (Invercargill), 1 up at the 19 th. In addition to the first round of the championship the Coronation Medal, an 18 holes stroke handicap, was played to-day and resulted in a win for Miss Turton (Nelson), who returned a gross score of 86, her handicap of 13 giving her a net 73. The winner headed the second division in which she also took the trophy. The first division trophy was won by Mrs W. A. Scott (Timaru), with 81—7—74. Other good cards were: First Division. Miss N. Morrish (Rangiora) 77 Mrs R. Orbell (North Otago) 78 Mrs E. G. Kerr (Timaru) 78 Miss J. Horwell (Timaru) 79 Second Division. Mrs Brittan (Christchurch) 78 Miss O. Smith (Napier) 79 Miss B. Holmes (Christchurch) 79 Mrs M. Kennedy (Ashburton) 79 There was a triple tie for the best gross score between Miss O. Kay (Otago), Mrs Scott (Timaru), and Mrs H. Dodgshun (Otago), the latter being declared the winner over the last nine holes. COMMENT ON THE PLAY STANDARD NOT HIGH. MRS DIXON’S KEEN MATCH. (Special to the Times.) Timaru, October 7. Conditions not quite so brilliant as those of the opening day prevailed today for the commencement of the New Zealand Ladies’ Golf championship. A slight shower prior to the start of play made the greens slightly slow, and it was not until half-way through the morning that they approached the fast state of the previous day. Eight players only were drawn in the first round, so the entry of 36 has been reduced by only four. To-morrow morning will see 16 matches staged, and after the completion of this round some guide should be afforded as to the prospects of a number of competHors,

The standard reached in to-day’s championship games fell a good deal short of that revealed in the interIsland match, but the players concerned, with the exception of Mrs Collinson, were not among the first flight. Apparently it was an off day for most players, even Miss Oliver Kay (Otago) staging a reversal of form compared with her brilliant round of 69 the previous afternoon. In a medal match today she returned a gross 81, which speaks for itself. The most convincing win of the day was that of Miss Jean Horwell, champion of the Timaru Ladies’ Club, who has only had three season’s golf. At the commencement of the season she had a handicap of 10 which is now reduced to seven. To-day she defeated Mrs Gamble (Otago) six and five, the winner having control practically from the start.

Mrs Collinson (Manawatu), who was runner-up to Miss Gaisford, the present holder of the New Zealand title, in the final of the Manawatu championship, easily accounted for Miss V. Fleming, champion of the Russlcy, Shirley and Hagley clubs, five and. three. The winner exhibited greater steadiness in driving, but the form of both on the greens was hardly up to standard. The most keenly contested game of the day was that between Miss E. Macfarlane (Russley) and Mrs Dixon (Invercargill), the former winning one up at the 19th. At one stage Miss Macfarlane was four down, but she staged a wonderful recovery over the last four holes, all of which she won in bogey figures. The pair were all square on the last green, Miss Macfarlane winning the 19th.
