Childs was successful in gaining her teacher’s “C” certificate at the recent teachers’ examinations. Mr and Mrs C. J. The engagement is announced of Vera, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs A’. F. Martin, formerly of Invercargill, to Charles, youngest son of Mr and Mrs R. Gibson, Addington, Christchurch.

Miss Smith, Bank of New South Wales, left on Thursday morning for Wellington en route to Tasmania, where she will be the guest of her sister, Mrs Arthur Innes, of Port Cygnet, for a few weeks. The Rev. K. D. and Mrs AndrewsBaxter, Filleul street, leave on Monday for Dunedin, where they will be the guests of Mrs E. Howlison, Castle street, while the Rev. Andrews-Baxter attends the Anglican Synod.

Miss Scott and Sister Wix, of Prospect House, Dunedin, spent last weekend as the guests of Mrs E. J. Mills, Nelson street, leaving on Monday by the Matai for Westport, whence they will return overland to Dunedin.

Mr and Mrs C. S. Longuet, Gala street, returned from Dunedin on Thursday evening. Mr Longuet went up to Dunedin on Tuesday for the Flower Show, and met Mrs Longuet there after her five weeks’ holiday in Wellington. Mrs James Erskine Watson, Miss Watson and Mr Jim Watson, who after spending the past seven years in England and on the Continent, recently returned to New Zealand, are motoring down from Dunedin to-day to spend a few days with Mrs Watson’s sister, Mrs F. D. Moriah, Grey street.

A popular dance organized under the auspices of the personnel of the G.S.S. Matai was held in Barber’s Hall, Bluff, last Friday evening. The hall looked very attractive, with bunting, balloons and coloured lamps as the chief decorations, A large number attended the function, all the available accommodation being taken and from every point of view the dance was a success. Mesdames J. S. Robbie and J. Dixon were at a kitchen evening held in St. John’s Hall on Saturday in honour of Miss May Greenwood, who is shortly to be married. The hall was gaily decorated for the occasion, and cards and dancing formed the evening’s programme. Enjoyable music was provided by Mrs Adams (piano), and Mr F. Prattley (drums' and effects). Extras were played by Messrs D. Carswell and D. Henderson Powell. At an appropriate interval Mr J. S. Robbie called on Miss Greenwood to accept gifts from those present. Mr B. J. Mr and Mrs H. W. Macfarlane, _of Fendalton, Christchurch, are motoring down on Tuesday to be the guests of Mr and Mrs R. A. Anderson at Victoria Park for about ten days. Mrs W. C. Arkle, of Palmerston South, arrived in Invercargill on Tuesday evening to attend the wedding of her nephew, Mr B. J. H. Macdonald, of Bluff, to Miss May Greenwood, which takes place next Wednesday. Jhe engagement is announced between Flying Officer Arnold Wall, R.A.F., only son of Professor and the late Mrs Wall, of Christchurch, and nephew of the Dowager Duchess of Somerset, and Christine Elizabeth (Betty), only daughter of Commander and Mrs Hippisley, of Ston Easton Park, near Bath.

The bridge circle of the Women’s Club met for the last evening of the season on Monday, when there were twelve tables in play. Mrs C. F. Hackworth won the prize for highest score, and Mrs G. H. Uttley won the hidden number prize. During the evening the president presented the prizes for the season, and Mrs R. S. Mclnnes (chairwoman of the Bridge Circle) presented to the president, from the club, an etching which had been won by the circle in the bridge matches with Gore.

The annual meeting of the Southland Branch of the Archerfield Old Girls’ Association was held at Victoria Park last Saturday afternoon, when members were the guests of the retiring president, Miss Kathleen Anderson. A cable from Brisbane brought a great deal of pleasure to the meeting, because it conveyed the good wishes of Mrs Nisbet, founder and for many years Lady Principal of Archerfield, whose interest in her old pupils never lessens. After the meeting several sets of tennis were played, followed by afternoon tea. Those present were: Mesdames R. R. Binney, A. R. On Monday evening a number of members of the Play-reading Circle of the Southland Women’s Club motored up to Gore for the purpose of reading four one-act plays to the Gore Playreading Circle. A very cordial welcome was extended to them on their arrival, and the Gore Women s Club ■was bright with flowers to receive them. Mrs J. M. Boyne, the chairwoman, was the hostess for the evening, at the end of which Mrs Ritchie Crawford thanked her for the hospitality they had received and the very cordial reception of their reading. The plays were: “The Scarecrow,” The Lovely Miracle,” “A Matter of Course, and “Birds of a Feather,” and those taking part were: Mesdames Ritchie Crawford, C. E. Watts, T. S. Tomlinson, F. M. Corkill, N. R. Macalister, J. G. Macdonald, Stanley Brown, Rewi Kingsland and Miss May Manson. Mesdames T. F. Gilkison, R. N. Todd and E. K. Smythies accompanied them. The beautiful weather made such an evening excursion particularly attractive, and all those wh<y made the trip enjoyed it immensely.

A delightful afternoon was spent at Dr and Mrs J. G. Macdonald’s residence at Otatara on Wednesday, when about thirty members of the Garden Circle of the Southland Women’s Club took advantage of the glorious weather that has made this spring a season of continuous wonderment, to motor over before the last of the bulbs had bloomed. Everywhere in the green lawns daffodils appeared in many varieties, blending with the generous blue of many grape hyacinths, and walking through the bush the visitors discovered numbers of wood anemones to add to the afternoon’s enchantment. On the return to the house, afternoon tea was served on the wide verandah, after which Mrs Owen-Johnston made a happy little speech thanking Mrs Macdonald for the opportunity of sharing such beauties.
