MOKOTUA NOTES

TENNIS CLUB. There was an attendance of over 30 at the annual meeting of the Mokotua Tennis Club on Tuesday evening, presided over by the president,. Mr H. Burgess. The annual report, which was adopted, stated:. “The 1931-32 season was entirely satisfactory as a keen interest was manifest in the game throughout the season, and a decided improvement in the standard of play resulted. Although a late start was made, several interesting matches were played with the neighbouring clubs, Waituna- and Kapuka. During the season the club held a dance which proved to be very successful both socially and financially. The club takes this opportunity of extending its thanks to Mr B. Clearwater for the use of his ground. Appreciation is also shown of the general help which Mr Clearwater gave to the club during the season. Thanks are also due to all those who assisted with the social functions connected with the club. Financially the club is in a very satisfactory position, the balance-sheet showing a credit of £ll 5/4.” The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing season:—Patron, Mr James Milne; president, Mr H. Burgess (re-elected); vice-presi-dents, Messrs J. Wilson and M. Summers; committee, Messrs T O’Driscoll, A. Meredith, G. P. Enright and Misses J. Meredith, M. O’Driscoll and J. Burgess; secretary, Mr T. A. O’Driscoll; auditor, Mr L. Glass. The principal matter for consideration was a suggestion emanating from the Oteramika School Committee that the Mokotua Tennis Club join with it in an effort to have an up-to-date concrete court constructed on the school playground, the finance and necessary working bees to be met by both bodies on a fifty-fifty basis. It was decided by a large majority to adopt the scheme and at the same time to retain the present earth court for the benefit of those members residing at the south end of Mokotua A committee of representatives of both bodies was appointed to carry out the necessary works, those appointed to represent the Tennis Club being Messrs H. Burgess, T. O’Driscoll and G. P. Enright. As the new court, though probably being proceeded with immediately, will not be ready for the season’s opening it was decided to hold the opening ceremony on the old court on Saturday afternoon, October 15. The members’ subscription was fixed at 7/6 for all using club racquets and 5/- for members with their own racquets. The question of concessions for youths, etc, was left to the incoming committee. General. An innovation at the Mokotua. Dairy Factory is a steam whistle which is blown at 7.30 a.m. and 9 a.m., noon and 4 p.m. With the correct time available through the radio each day residents within a wide radius of the factory are now able to set their clocks to the factory whistle. The appliance was presented to the factory by Mr J. E. Jefcoate. An amusing incident occurred recently when this unusual whistle was sounded just as a lorry driver was a few hundred yards from the railway crossing Thinking a train was approaching the crossing, he slowed down and, after peering intently in each direction, came to a stop. When eventually no train appeared he crossed the line wearing a most mystified look, glancing back repeatedly after getting safely across—much to the delighted amusement of the observing cheesemakers.
