RIVERSDALE NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.)

On Friday evening about 30 friends of Mr R. Smith gathered together at the residence of Mr and Mrs F. Wick’ to bid him farewell prior to his de parture from Riversdale. Mr Smith, who has been employed by the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company for some six years, has been stationed for the past two years at Riversdale, where he has taken a very active part in many local organizations. The evening was spent in card-playing, the progressive euchre being won by Mrs Denniston and Mr R. Smith. The men’s consolation prize, after a very interesting play-off between Mr C. Tayles and Mr J. Elder went to the latter. The chairman, Mr F. Wicks, called upon Mr E. Edie to present Mr Smith with a leather suitcase which his friends were giving him as a token of the esteem in which he was held throughout the district. Mr Edie, in making the presentation, expressed his regret at Mr Smith’s departure. He said he had known him before coming to Riversdale and had always found him a clean-living, obliging friend. Mr Wicks spoke on the same lines as Mr Edie.

Mr George Kerr stated that although he and Mr Smith had been business opponents, they had always been the best of friends. Mr Kerr also made reference to the excellent qualities of Mr Smith’s parents. Mr R. Clarke and Mr R. H. Matthews also spoke, making reference to the departing guest’s excellent qualities and expressing regret at his departure. On rising to reply Mr Smith was greeted with applause. He thanked those present for the excellent gift they had given him and the speakers for the many pleasant remarks they had made concerning him. Mr Smith also thanked all those who had made him so welcome on his arrival. He had been practically a stranger on arriving, but had been treated as an old friend. Continuing, the speaker made reference to the assistance that had been given him by his business associate, Mr D. McLennan. He also stated that he had had in Mr Kerr a worthy business opponent and a strong friend. He also thanked Mr and Mrs Wicks for all they had done for him. At the conclusion of the function Mr G. Kerr proposed a hearty vote of thanks to all who had assisted with the function, and in particular to Mr and Mrs F. Wicks, who had placed their house at the disposal of Mr Smith’s well-wishers. General. Mrs N. Soper and Mr M. Windle were the winners of the September golf match. The weather has been ideal and consequently the links have been a very popular- resort for many of the local enthusiasts. For some time pie club has been considering changing the links from the present location to a site on the Kaweka Road in the vicinity of the cemetery. The site has been looked over by some members of the club and they have found it quite suitable for the purpose. It has been decided, however, that the links will not be shifted until the end of the season. Over the week-end five visitors from the Mataura Golf Club played an enjoyable match on the local links.

Master E. Green was admitted to the Gore Public Hospital on Sunday suffering . from a broken arm. He was playing on top of a barrel when he had the misfortune to slip and jar his arm. It was not until later that it was discovered that the arm was broken. He is progressing favourably.
