LUMSDEN NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.)

A meeting of residents and farmers interested in the unemployment schemes was called for Thursday evening, September 22. Unfortunately though there was a fair attendance the meeting was not representative of the farming district. It had become necessary to form an allocation committee and a committee to attend to the working of the No. 4A scheme. Mr H. O. Williams presided. The following were appointed to the committees: Allocation committee, Messrs N. O. Williams and Mr T. Small; No. 4 A scheme committee, Messrs T. Small and W. Dripps. Since the schemes have been in operation the bulk of the clerical work has fallen on the Town Clerk so it was decided that a secretary should be appointed. An unsuccessful effort was made at the meeting, a decision being made that the Town Clerk continue in the meantime until more satisfactory arrangements can be made. At the close of the meeting Messrs H. O. Williams, T. Small, W. Little and C. Moloney thanked the electors for their support during the recent Town Board election. Mr Eric Glen, proprietor of the Ideal Tea Company, presented 201 b of tea to be distributed among the unemployed in Lumsden. A meeting of the newly formed Girl Guide Committee was held on Friday afternoon when Mrs James Campbell presided over the following members: Mesdames Clouston, Ibbotson, Welsh, Black, Patterson, Shuttleworth, Allison and Miss Graham. Before commencing the business of the afternoon Mrs Campbell thanked the members for the honour they had conferred upon her in electing her president. Tv'- new members, Mesdames Black and Welsh, were then enrolled by the Commissioner, Mrs Clouston. Miss Nellie Clouston, who is now a first class guide and who has had four years’ training in the local company, was apnointed second lieutenant of the Lumsden Company. The committee congratulated Miss Clouston on the splendid work she had always done as a guide and company leader. For some time the Guides have been making outfits for use in the local hospital and on Friday afternoon Miss Allen was invited to the meeting when Mrs Clouston handed over the garments which are to be taken into stock. Miss Allen thanked Mrs Clouston and the guides for the gift. The garments which were made for the Lady Alice Fergusson Cup competition, were handed to Miss Sims, Plunket nurse, to be disposed of at her discretion. It was decided that the sum of £3 be handed to Mrs Clouston to help to defray the expenses of guides attending the rally in Invercargill during October. Members of the committee were invited to visit the guides at work on the last Friday of each month.

On Friday evening the members of the Plunket Committee held a successful social as a wind-up to the euchre tournaments which had been run during the winter months. The social took the form of an old timers’ dance. The prizes for the best costumes, whtca were donated by Mrs J. Crawford, were awarded to Mrs T. Reid and Mr G. Aitcheson. After supper Mrs Marshall, president of the Lumsden branch of the Plunket Society, thanked those who had helped to make the function a success and then presented the prizes won during the tournament. Aggregate prizes were won by Mrs Angus McDonald, 291 noints (prize donated by Miss Drummond, Five Rivers) and Mr J. McAlister, 232 points. The runnersup were Mrs Welsh, 281 points, and Mr J.
