RIVERTON

A dance held in the Oddfellows Hall on September 17 was well attended. Mr E. Shaw supplied the music, and Mr J. McKay was M.C. Miss Ivy Robertson, Invercargill, spent the week-end with her sister, Mrs A. Boniface, Palmerston street. Mrs Nichol, Ohai, has been visiting Mrs I. Gilchrist.

Miss M. Turner has left for Dunedin, where she is taking up duty at the Public Hospital. The members of the Riverton High School Ex-Pupils’ Association held a most successful social gathering in More’s Hall on Thursday evening. Welcome speeches were made by Messrs G. O. Cassels and J. A. Walker. Mr R. Dickson was M.C., and music was supplied by the school orchestra, Mr and Mrs J. Green and Mrs J. Cassels, while Misses P. Hancock and N. Robertson played a pianoforte duet. On Wednesday evening in the Gummies Bush Hall a euchre contest was held between players representing Gummies Bush and Riverton. Several closely contested games were witnessed, the visitors eventually winning by 13 games. Mrs G. Dickson was first in the ladies’ class and Miss Bulman second, the consolation prize going to Mrs Kelly. Messrs W. Hopwood and Mr McKenzie were first and second respectively in the men’s section, Mr Hopwood taking the consolation trophy. At the Japanese Fair held on behalf of the local Plunket Society, a number 'of prizes were awarded for the children's fancy dress parade. The winners were: Kitty Hancock, N. Walker, Bruce Patrick and Graham Macdougall, while Betty McLean was awarded a special donated by Mrs Colville. Mr and Mrs Colville were the judges. Mr and Mrs P. Dwyer, Dunedin, are visiting friends.
