CIVIL WARFARE
CHINESE FORCES MARINES TAKE CONTROL OF CHEFOO ORDER MAINTAINED (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Shanghai, September 24. There was a startling development in the Shantung warfare on Saturday morning when Chinese marines from gunboats belonging to Marshal Chang Hsueh-liang’s forces landed and assumed control of Chefoo without encountering resistance. Chinese circles believe the move was intended to secure the port’s huge revenue and defeat Lui Chen-nien who has held supreme control of the Chefoo district for the past five years. Excellent order was maintained in the city.
A message dated September 23, stated: Despatches from Chefoo state that fighting at Shantung is increasing _in seriousness, all attempts at mediation apparently having failed. Hostilities are proceeding at Laichow and Laiyang, and foreign missionaries have evacuated both places. This civil war, in charge of rival war lords, Han Fuchu and Lui Chen-nien, goes on in spite of the Government’s urgent request to them to submit their territorial disputes for peaceful settlement at Nanking.
