UNEMPLOYMENT FUNDS
COST OF ADMINISTRATION.
mr d. McDougall asks for INQUIRY. •
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, September 23.
That too much was being spent or the administration of unemployment funds was inferred by Mr D. McDougall in the House this afternoon when he gave notice that he intended to ask the Minister of Employment to inquire whether an officer of the Unemployment Board residing in Christchurch was receiving £6 a week and expenses and £8 a week as secretary of a pro-? gross league. If such was the case, would the Minister have this gentleman removed from the Unemployment Board and give the position to some one who would be qualified for it. In a note attached to his question, Mr McDougall said that it seemed harsh that any person should be drawing £6 a week and £8 as secretary for another position taking into consideration the fact that funds were so low that the Unemployment Committee in Invercargill could not afford to give more than 15/- a week for 48 hours’ work to a man with seven of a family to keep who was clearing bush under a land development scheme.
