REDUCTION OF ALLOWANCES.
(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.)
Sydney, September 23.
The Canberra correspondent of the Daily Telegraph reports that the Minister of Commerce, Mr C. A. S. Hawker, resigned from the Lyons Cabinet early this morning. For some time Mr Hawker has had differences with his colleagues on the exchange question. Mr Hawker later voted against the Government on an amendment to the Financial Emergency Bill. The Canberra correspondent of the Sydney Morning Herald says that Mr Hawker has announced that he had resigned owing to a disagreement on the question of a further reduction of the allowances to Ministers. He emphasized that there had been no disagreement on any matter relating to policy. Mr Hawker voted for Mr Gabb’s amendment to reduce the salaries of senators and members .of the House of Representatives to £6OO, which was defeated by 55 votes to 8. A later message states that as Mr Hawker had handled all the communications from Ottawa, his resignation is a severe blow to Cabinet at the present juncture. The Prime Minister, Mr J. A. Lyons, expressed regret at Mr Hawker’s decision, and intimated that the vacancy would be filled next week.
