GANDHI FASTING
ALREADY FEELING EFFECTS. POSSIBILITY OF AGREEMENT. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Calcutta, September 22. Gandhi’s strength is evidently not the same as before. He fasted 42 days a few years ago, but is already showing signs of exhaustion after 36 hours. His wife, who is also a political prisoner, has been transferred to the Yeradhi Gaol to take care of her husband. Gandhi, who has his own physician in attendance at Yeradhi gaol, met the leaders of the depressed classes and discussed proposals for a solution of the problem of their representation in the legislatures. High hopes are still entertained of an agreement, approved by Gandhi, which would justify the British Government modifying the terms of the communal award in respect to the depressed classes. If such an agreement is reached Gandhi would presumably break his fast. DRINKING SODA WATER. (Rec. 7 p.m.) Calcutta, September 22. Gandhi drinks frequently water containing a small quantity of soda. Hindu untouchable leaders renewed their efforts at Poona yesterday to reach a settlement on the electorates issue, and following an interview with Gandhi last night stated that a final decision was likely to-day.
