SOUTH INVERCARGILL.
To the Editor.
Sir, —Intense criticism of the Government’s unemployment schemes, was the theme of the Mayor at the South Council’s meeting on Monday last, but speech lacked definite and concrete proposals for the betterment of the position. In December last Mr McChesney was heralded as the official Coalition candidate, asking Reform supporters _ to accept, and assist his nomination, pledged to keep the Government in power, against a motion of no-confid-ence moved by the Leader of the Opposition. Why so much criticism now? The Mayor and Council down south surely take up a singular attitude with regard to men ori relief work. The very fact that their wages are so low, should spur them on to lend a helping hand to these men, as suggested by the Unemployment Board. A sack of potaties, even if grown in the South Borough, would be more comfort, to the needy than columns of political propaganda put over the council table by Mr McChesney. He, as Mayor, should remember he represents all sections of political opinion, and it is bad taste on his part to introduce politics into municipal affairs.
It is io be hoped that his ill-timed statements do not increase the burden of the men, who he contends he’s anxious to assist.—l am, etc. ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.
