FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce ■was held yesterday, Mr D. Rutledge presiding oVei* Messrs J. H. Reed, A. le H, Hoyles, S. R. Louden, R. M. Strang, W. Grieve, D. J. Wesney, 0. J. Wright, T. S. Tomlinson, 0. flratmald, J. Lindsay, C. B. Tapley, J. Stevenson, H. L. Mair and A. M. Macdonald. . The Minister of Internal Affairs (the jf-rfr Adam Hamilton) wrote acknowledging the chamber’s communication regarding the Government’s policy for a more efficient co-operation and control of local bodies. “My own desire in this connection is that the Goveniifi&n fth&tfld not at this stage lay down definite plans for a new policy on this important matter, but an attempt should be made to co-operate more closely than in the past with local bodies in an endeavour to formulate, with their assistance, a system that would improve the somewhat varied control that exists st present,” Mr Hamilton stated. “The Government fully recognizes the value of the work that has been and is being done by local bodies, and I am of the opinion that better results could be achieved by a greater co-operation with local bodies than by setting up a commission which is generally expensive, and it is sometimes difficult to put the recommendations into practice.” The secretary of the Associated Chambers wrote advising that the annual conference would be held in Dunedirt on September 27 and 28. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs Hutledge, Tomlinson, Hoyles, J. Gilkison, Strang and Bradfield was set up to examine all remits suggested for the conference and to report on whether they were of sufficient importance to be forwarded for consideration. A memorandum on juvenile employment, received from the New Zealand Technical School Teachers’ Association, was referred for consideration to the local Boys’ Unemployment Committee.
