SHOPS PILLAGED
RIOTING AT ST. JOHN’S. POLICE SCATTER MOB. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) St. John’s (Newfoundland), July 26. Rioting broke out here early to-day when a surging mob shattered windows and pillaged shops before the police scattered them. Two policemen were injured, while 18 rioters were arrested. It was a small affair compared to those last April. The ostensible reason for the latest trouble was the desire for a report on the negotiations between the Government and the banks lor a loan to finance a programme for street work to assist the unemployed. A syndicate of Canadian banks today announced that they would advance 100,000 dollars required to finance a programme of work to relieve the unemployed.
